Polio Eradication High Council Meeting was Held

The Polio Eradication High Council meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Najibullah Mujadidi Senior Advisor to the President & President’s Focal Point to Polio Eradication with the participations of Health Minister, focal points of ministries & relevant institutions, donors, UN’s institutions including UNICEF and World Health Organizations in order to provide comprehensive support program of polio eradication in Afghanistan.

Dr. Najibullah Mujadidi Senior Advisor to the president & President’s focal point to polio eradication, while, appreciating the efforts and activities of the Polio eradication incharges, emphasized on the strengthening of coordination and joint efforts of governmental and nongovernmental organizations in the field of polio eradication.

He called the polio eradication programs to be promising, and expressed his satisfaction that Afghanistan would be able to reach the final goal of the program, which is the complete eradication of polio.

Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz the Health Minister, called the polio eradication as a national & global health priority and said “in the beginning of 2016 we said that we are reaching to our goal of polio eradication in the country rather than other time” but today we can say that we are more closer on reaching the eradication of polio more than ever.

He added, the figures and information provided indicate that the polio virus is on the verge of eradication, and the program is encouraging and promising.

Health Minister said; that since the beginning of 2016, polio virus has not been circulating in 99% of Afghanistan's districts, and this is the success which approved world-wide.

He said that this success was not possible without the strong commitment of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the cooperation of relevant departments and ministries, saying the progress of the Afghan government and international partners should not be discontinued.

According to the Ministry of Public Health officials, Afghanistan has witnessed 20 polio evidence in 2015, which is declining every year.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), emphasized that all people should understand the importance of polio vaccines and vaccinate their children before paralysis.

In this meeting, two memorandum of understanding on polio eradication have been signed by the Ministries of Hajj and Information Technology with the Ministry of Public Health.

Seven other memorandum of understanding are to be signed with the Ministry of Public Health.

The Polio Eradication High Council recently has been set up to provide comprehensive support for the Polio eradication Program in Afghanistan, and meet on a quarterly basis, under the chairmanship of the president’s focal point to polio eradication.
